I bought a futon the other day. I don’t like the cover. I can get a duvet cover cheaper than a futon cover. How do I figure how what size duvet cover to use?

Just lay your futon mattress out flat and measure it (lengthwise and widthwise), then buy a duvet cover that’s at least that large or larger. The depth of the futon mattress shouldn’t be too much more than the “depth” of the featherbed or quilt that duvet covers are supposed to cover.
If the one you buy is too large in one direction or the other, you’ll have to sew the end (widthwise or lengthwise) a little shorter to make it fit well, but if it’s just widthwise (I think that’s the direction I mean) you could perhaps just tuck any excess duvet cover into the folded area of the futon when it’s being used as a sofa.
OR…you could just buy two large pieces of fabric the size of your futon cover –or buy sheets or bedspreads, etc, instead– plus the depth of the sides, and sew them into a huge “pillowcase” yourself. Slip the huge pillowcase over your futon mattress, then sew the open side closed or close that side with ties or snaps or something else.

Well, duvet covers and futon covers are different shapes and usually different material too, because you sit on a futon and wear out the fabric easier. Try here for duvet covers: http://www.duvetscomfortersandbedding.com/ and then here for futon covers: http://www.thefutonsite.com/. Good luck!
